Succession can be defined as the sequential movement of plant species into a space. It also refers to the passage of property from one generation to another. The cultural world in which we live has been layered on top of nature, and in turn, nature reclaims this space by building on our constructions. Concrete is laid over land, and in turn, grass grows from the cracks in this concrete, reaching through the cultural layer to the underlying soil. Culture and nature build recursively on each other creating a layered sense of space. This layered space reflects a history, a pattern of growth and decomposition that serves as a marker of time. My work references this process through the accumulation of texture and pattern, an abundance of organic growth quietly moving in succession to occupy open space. The gallery becomes a microcosm, a place of intersection in which the binary relationship between culture and nature softens and becomes more fluid.
